This photography project stemmed from my love for books and learning. During an Ethics of Leadership course, I was able to explore the ethics surrounding book banning. This is something that saddens me because of how much I value my ability to read and learn from stories that are different from my own. So, it was truly interesting to explore both sides of this issue. I wanted to be able to share my love for books and the harm that censorship has the capacity to inflict. I struggled to entertain this project through the lens of censorship and anger while still being authentic to myself and creating works that felt true to my personality. These were the resulting images…

Incorporating Design…

To utilize my own photography in a designed experience, I considered where I would envision these images to be utilized. I thought about libraries or museum exhibitions about literature as base ideas. With this I decided to create a calendar that I could envision being used in those spaces for marketing or events.

These calendars utilize my original photographs. The typeface was chosen as Times New Roman as it is reminiscent of the timeless magic I believe books hold. I also made the conscious choice to exclude adding dates to the calendar so that it holds its own timelessness. It could be used in any year or even reused if laminated and paired with a dry-erase marker.
